Salida Artists Second Saturday Gallery Tour

Each month, members of Salida Artists open their doors to seasoned collectors, art lovers, and artists via the Second Saturday Gallery Tour. This easy stroll between galleries and other creative spaces gives the public the ability to participate in this vibrant creative community. A featured gallery is chosen every month.

The majority of galleries are open from 4 to 9 p.m. Contact each participating location for times.

This month's featured gallery/artist is The Maverick Potter.

Crows and chocolates are what’s new at The Maverick Potter! For this month’s second Saturday Art Event, we are happy to present two Colorado artists we now represent. Shelley Goddard is a Boulder artist doing delightful work with hand-drawn crows. Patty Denny is the owner and chocolatier at Telluride Truffle. These amazing truffles are each a tiny work of delectable art that you won’t have to struggle to find room for! Reception to start at 5pm on Saturday, come talk with us about open studio night, workshops with Tia Pleiman, and our plans for ArtWalk

The Maverick Potter opened in May of 2008 by owners Mark Rittmann and his wife Suzanne. Call it what you will, a leap of faith or burning desire to follow the pottery tradition, Mark left a 15 year career in the beer business to open up the Maverick Potter.  Mark earned a BA in Ceramics from Lewis and Clark College in 1991.  His interest in clay was solidified when he had an opportunity to study with a native potter in Ecuador during college. “Working the clay with my feet, harvesting tree limbs to fire the kiln, and forming pottery on his truck tire pottery wheel gave me a new connection to clay.  I enjoyed the fact you could take the earth, form it, subject it to heat and you would have a pot.   The possibilities are endless and it merits a life time of exploration.”

Mark has shown in galleries in Oregon, Arizona, and Colorado.  His current focus is on large multi-piece thrown vases. These pieces are then fired in atmospheric kilns to allow the fire to play its part on the clay canvas.  “It is my hope that the energy I put into my pottery helps to connect people to the earth, to the art of handmade, and the tradition of artisanship.”

Join us for a fun evening to kick start the summer.  We are located at 119 F St. in downtown Salida and can be reached at 719 539 5112.
