“The Big Bad Mood and Other Love Stories”
An Arts Collaborative – the artwork of 24 Salida artists, inspired by original writings
Curated by Sue Ann Hum and Jennifer Dempsey
February’s Paquette Gallery exhibition, “The Big Bad Mood and Other Love Stories,” is a collaboration of 24 local artists, who will display new work inspired by the poems and prose of Salida’s own Jennifer Dempsey.
Each work is a visual interpretation of Dempsey’s words, which Dempsey and Sue Ann Hum (the exhibition’s curator) have also crafted into a one-act play, to be performed in the Paquette Gallery on Sunday, February 25 at 3:00 pm.
Salida resident Jennifer Dempsey began writing “The Big Bad Mood and Other Love Stories,” short works both humorous and dramatic, 30 years ago. Her writings reflect her struggle, accomplishment, self-doubt, infidelity, hope, loss, joy, love, fear, angst, confidence, and confusion as related to her experience of being a woman.
Participating visual artists are: Laura Barton, Paulette Brodeur, James Brown, Christine Davis, Jennifer Dempsey, Janine Frazee, Tina Gramann, Fay Golson, Katwin Hinerman, Sue Ann Hum, Erica Kinsella, Teresa Koransky, Julie Maas, Jim Marshall, Helen Martin, Sally Mather, Jessie Miller, Zoë Rayor, Max Ruppick, Jimmy Sellars, Karen Shaw, Roberta Smith, Dustin Tidwell, Rich Tyler, and Patti Vincent.
Displayed alongside the artwork will be both the poem that inspired the art and a brief note from the artist about his or her inspiration.
The month-long arts collaboration culminates with an elaborately staged reading of the full works at 3:00 pm February 25, adapted for the stage and directed by local artist Sue Ann Hum. Local actors Paul Byers, Jennifer Dempsey, Denise Goetz, Sharon King, Athena Kintgen, and Sandra Levitt will premiere the now-scripted original poems alongside the exhibition in the Paquette Gallery.
