May's Creative Mixer

You are invited to May's Creative Mixer!

Join the Salida Council for the Arts on Thursday, May 11 in the Paquette Gallery of the SteamPlant Event Center for a fine and festive social hour, from 5: 30 to 7.    Munchies are served, the cash bar is open, live keyboard music will be playing and you’ll hear news about SO many creative projects being launched.  Join us, bring your friends, meet some new ones,  and, if you have news about your own artistic endeavor, you’re invited to step up on the “Soapbox” and share the excitement.

Imagine!  The guest artist in the Paquette this month is Salida Circus, Colorado’s most creative circus!  Jennifer Dempsey, founder/performer/mama/fundraiser supreme will be on hand at Creative Mixer to tell us about a special celebration for Memorial Day Weekend.

Salida Circus celebrates it’s 10-Year Anniversary!  Hundreds of kids - adults too - have participated in our circus’s festive program over the years: aerial acts, stiltwalkers, tumbling, juggles, clowning, doggy performers with more and more exciting acts added regularly.

Performing all over the state, and internationally in Ireland and Jordan, they stage workshops and special performances, indoors and out.  Salida Circus always presents good fellowship with colorful entertainment.

Creative Mixer is honored to feature keyboarder Joan Lubeck, in her first Mixer appearance.  Joan ( who also has a connection to Salida Circus, ask her! ) is new to Salida and is booking background music in small venues.  ( Does your gallery or store still need some music for Art Walk? )  She’s a vocalist, accompanying herself on piano and ukulele.   Her extensive background is as a church accompanist, choir director, and soloist.
Joan is now exploring new opportunities, such as joining a small ensemble or pairing up with a guitarist/vocalist, so ask her about that too!

Jasper Johns

With the campaign season joyfully behind us, everyone is come by the SteamPlant this Thursday for art, music, friendship and snacks! The Salida Council for the Arts is hosting their free, monthly Creative Mixer at Salida SteamPlant from 5:30 – 7:00 Thursday, November 10. At this month’s mixer, two Colorado Artists are sharing the exhibition space and a favorite local musician will supply the tunes.

Artists Gail Frasier and Lynne Milliken will speak about their current show, “Of The Earth: Gratitude."  In their show, Milliken’s oil paintings and Frasier’s clay vessels interpret earth’s gifts, from majestic skies and rolling waters, to those tiny treasures that often go unnoticed. Both artists grew up in rural communities then spent years in the mountains, where earth, water, and weather are major factors.  After years of individual artistic pursuits, these friends came upon a quote by actress Julia Roberts, “The Earth does not need us; We need the Earth”, which gave birth to their artistic collaboration.  Frasier and Milliken are looking forward to sharing their artistic and environmental journey with this mountain community. Their exhibit continues through November 30.

Salida guitarist Scott Adams is always a crowd favorite, and will play throughout the evening. The finger style guitarist is known for his mastery of Hawaiian slack key, folk, blues, ragtime and bottleneck styles. Influenced by Leo Kottke, John Fahey, and Stephan Grossman, among others, Scott has been playing solo for more than 35 years; and builds exotic steel-string guitars as a hobby.

As always, the “Soapbox” waits for you and your announcements. If you have news of an upcoming art project, you’re invited to get on the soapbox and tell everyone about it! The Salida Council for the Arts will also feature your event on the Cultural calendar on their website, and share the information on the radio. The Creative Mixer offers free munchies and a cash bar offering liquid creativity, too.

ART EXHIBITION – Laura Donovan

MUSIC by Mark M. Rostenko

The monthly Creative Mixer is a popular social evening hosted by the Salida Council for the Arts, with the support of the Creative District and the SteamPlant Event Center.   The Creative Mixer is held every second Thursday in the SteamPlant's Paquette Gallery. In October, the Mixer is on the 13th, from 5:30 to 7:00. Everyone is most welcome!  Bring the neighbors, your family and friends, and participate.  Meet new artists, local residents or visitors, and chat with Council members about current projects.

The Creative Mixer offers free munchies, a chance to study the current art show at the Paquette gallery, listen to news about upcoming artistic activities and, of course, socialize with your friends, new and old. There will be a cash bar offering liquid creativity, too.

Entrepreneur Laura Donavan shows her artwork this month at the Creative Mixer. A woman of diverse talents, Donovan and her husband have based their graphic arts business in Salida since 2000. They have also created a baby toy, which they’re currently working on bringing to market. Donovan says her current SteamPlant art show “is a little love letter to animals and children, shadows and airplanes.  It's inspired by all the extraordinary artists who live and work in Salida, and it was fun to get back to an easel and away from the computer. I plan to keep the paints out, because nothing makes my day quite like a lop-eared rabbit on a strider bike.”

October’s featured musical artist is award-winning Indie singer-songwriter, Mark M. Rostenko. Rostenko is a Wall Street escapee, who has been recovering from the frantic business world in a remote mountain cabin above Cotopaxi, writing songs and playing his guitar.

Take a break from your winterizing projects and join the Salida Council for the Arts for a soft, friendly night of Mixing. October evenings are so lovely next to the river and attending the Creative Mixer can be your favorite way to infuse and absorb the Sweet Salida Vibe.

From Roberta Smith's show My Dogged Dreams.

Roberta Smith - My Dogged Dreams - now through the month of May.

After years of making adult decisions regarding my artwork, I decided to take heed of my inner child who kept insisting, “Can’t we just have some fun now?”  So I turned the steering wheel of our creativity bus over to her while I tried to recover from my years of study at a prestigious New York art school.  And fun and silliness abounded.  Some very odd aliens invaded my imagination sparked by the freshness and absence of pretense I observed in the drawings of young children.

Then I got Phoebe, an adorable labradoodle puppy, and I truly felt like a child again.

With Phoebe and her many canine friends I have embarked on a fascinating journey into a world previously unknown to me. Observing their antics both while awake and asleep sparked my fancy.  I can’t help but speculate on what they are thinking or dreaming.

o I have created some imaginary pups’ dreams complete with accessories evocative of their personalities and of course I have provided them with things to chase, to play with, to sniff and to chew.  Some even have alien companions. w I know this to be true—It’s never too late to have a happy childhood!

Come see the amusing results in paintings prints and collages.

February Creative Mixer

The SCFTA in cooperation with the SteamPlant are pleased to present the February Creative Mixer showcasing the Richard Cabe Salida Visual Artist Collection. Musical guest TBD. Join us at the SteamPlant Paquette Gallery. Musical guest Kenneth Dellenbaugh will be playing.

This collection evokes Salida’s vibrant art community and evolved from Richard's interest in assembling pieces from as many Salida visual artists as possible. He aimed to encourage the community itself to appreciate its diversity and creativity, and also to represent the richness of the Salida area’s visual art tradition.

Richard, an economist whose heart-work was creating abstract sculpture from native stone and industrial materials, acquired these pieces with the aim of building a comprehensive collection that could eventually shown publicly. Unfortunately, he died before he could complete the collection. His widow, Susan J. Tweit, and his daughter, Molly Cabe, decided to donate the collection to the Salida Council for the Arts with the hope others would be inspired by it and would add to it. (The collection also includes works by artists from elsewhere with associations to Salida, including participants in the Richard Cabe Terraphilia Artist/Writer Residency program.)

Salida Council for the Arts hosts this monthly happy hour. This event is a great chance to socialize with fellow artists in a relaxed atmosphere. Snacks are served and cash bar in the Paquette Gallery is available.
