These films are carefully selected to connect with the community by inspiring a stronger awareness of social issues, nature & the environment, as well as the arts and artists, to enhance community engagement and participation.

A Drummer's Dream is a rare and unique assembly of some of the greatest drummers in the world. Explosive talent, passion, humour and irresistible personality come together in a magical setting when seven diverse drummers create a profound and unforgettable experience. You've never seen drummers like this before! Featuring Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr, Dennis Chambers, Kenwood Dennard, Horacio "El-Negro" Hernadez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Mike Mangini and Raul Rekow, the film engages us with the rich music styles and influences that are as dynamic as the performers themselves. We are lifted to another dimension as we connect to the powerful forces of nature embodied in the music of these master musicians. The creative and spiritual freedom of expression these artists display is overwhelming - from Latin rhythms to the wildly original compositions of Kenwood Dennard. Rock, jazz, Latin fusion, soul - these master drummers have backed up the likes of Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Carlos Santana and now - each other. At the center of the film is the warm-hearted Nasyr, and his musician friends who share their knowledge with forty students for this incredible, unforgettable week of music and camaraderie. The overriding philosophy of these musicians is driven by love, compassion and joy of life. At the end of the film you will be tapping the rhythms that live within us all and the positive energy these masters display will continue to pulse through you for days to come.

The movie is scheduled for Monday, November 21st, at 7 p.m. at the Salida SteamPlant Theater.

Each month, Sellars Project Space, in conjunction with the Salida Creative District, will host a variety of inspiring and thought-provoking documentaries. These films are carefully selected to connect with the community by inspiring a stronger awareness of social issues, nature & the environment, as well as the arts and artists, to enhance community engagement and participation.

The Free Movie for October @ the SteamPlant Theater will be Private Violence, a 2014 HBO documentary about domestic abuse and the frustrations victims and their advocates face confronting the current legal system. The film, presented during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, is being shown in partnership with Salida’s Alliance Against Domestic Abuse and the Salida Creative District.

“The most dangerous place for women in America is their own home: One in four women experiences violence there at the hands of an abusive husband or boyfriend every day. Moreover, 1,700 American women are murdered every year when they leave or try to leave abusive relationships, and 48% of the women killed in domestic violence homicides are murdered after they leave or are in the process of leaving.  PRIVATE VIOLENCE emphasizes the stigma domestic violence still carries for its victims, telling the stories of two women: Deanna, a victim turned survivor, and Kit Gruelle, a survivor who advocates for justice on behalf of Deanna and other battered women. Highlighting the complex, frustrating realities of the abuse women suffer every day at the hands of intimate partners, as well as the difficulties of prosecuting domestic violence cases.”

Due to technical issues with the projector at the SteamPlant Theater, tonight's movie and panel discussion will be held in the SteamPlant Ballroom. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., film at 7:00 p.m., with a panel discussion afterwards that you are welcome to attend.

Sellars Project Space presents: Free Movies @ the SteamPlant

  • Salida SteamPlant Event Center Theater (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Each month, Sellars Project Space, in conjunction with the Salida Creative District, will host a variety of inspiring and thought-provoking documentaries. These films are carefully selected to connect with the community by inspiring a stronger awareness of social issues, nature & the environment, as well as the arts and artists, to enhance community engagement and participation.
Movies at the SteamPlant are always Free and Open to the Public.

This month's film is Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story.
From the filmmakers:
"We all love food. As a society, we devour countless cooking shows, culinary magazines and foodie blogs. So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash?

Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of waste from farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure, the images they capture of squandered groceries are both shocking and strangely compelling. But as Grant’s addictive personality turns full tilt towards food rescue, the ‘thrill of the find’ has unexpected consequences.

Featuring interviews with TED lecturer, author and activist Tristram Stuart and acclaimed author Jonathan Bloom, Just Eat It looks at our systemic obsession with expiry dates, perfect produce and portion sizes, and reveals the core of this seemingly insignificant issue that is having devastating consequences around the globe. Just Eat It brings farmers, retailers, inspiring organizations, and consumers to the table in a cinematic story that is equal parts education and delicious entertainment."

Donations are accepted and go to benefit programs for the Salida Creative District and the Salida Council for the Arts.

Space is limited - please RSVP to reserve your spot at sellarsprojectspace.com/movies

AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda is an unconventional biography about the Hindu Swami who brought yoga and meditation to the West in the 1920s. (Apparently, it was the only book that Steve Jobs had on his iPad.)
