ABOUT SALIDA ASIA FEST

Since 2016, Salida Creativity Lab has partnered with area schools, child care centers, after-school programs, and the community during Asia Fest to provide diverse cultural programming to more than 250 students and community members each year. From toddlers to adults, we study Asian culture and traditions through stories, art, and create imaginative 3D work culminating in a spectacular, homegrown parade and celebration for the Salida community. New this year is Salida’s first Lantern Festival and Parade of Lanterns! Thanks in part to supporters like you, Salida Creativity Lab continues this festive and important celebration for the community.

LANTERN- MAKING

In Asia, the Lunar New Year is typically celebrated for 15 days, with events kicking off on Lunar New Year then culminating after 15 days on the day of The Lantern Festival. Lanterns signify peace, renewal, light, remembrance, and family. This year, the events will feature a theme of lanterns and lantern-making. Students and the community will participate in lantern-making workshops in the schools and at Box of Bubbles. Participants will hear about the cultural significance and traditions of lanterns and will be able to create their own through hands-on workshops. The final lanterns will be featured in Salida’s first Parade of Lanterns-a festive and magical celebration not to be missed!

LATERN PARADE and CELEBRATION

Over the last six years, the ASIA FEST parade has provided students and the community an opportunity to showcase their creativity, show appreciation and awareness of Asian culture and traditions, and celebrate! We are living in challenging times, with many members of the community feeling isolated from each other. Opportunities such as these to celebrate and spread cheer are important to our community’s well being, in addition to preserving and learning about Asian heritage and culture in our rural town.

After the parade of lanterns, the community is invited to celebrate at the Steamplant with a program, music, refreshments, crafts and activities. The event is free to attend. In addition, featured will also be a few very special handmade lanterns, painted by local artists, on view during the celebration.

Salida Creativity Lab is seeking sponsorships which go directly toward lantern-making materials for the students and the community, and the free community celebration.
